I remember clearly when Mr.Poole came to Bethune. My parents,Louis and Thelma Knodel were very involved in the school and were bus drivers. I can remember my father trying to explain to Mr. Poole why school needed to be canceled during a blizzard when he first arrived. It only took a few storms to teach him why. Many of my school memories include him and Betty Guy as they were a team. Thanks Mr. Poole for working so hard to make our little school a successful place for our education. You will be missed by all. Dalene Knodel Enyart

My condolences to Nora and family. Mr. Poole gave me the start to my teaching career. I wouldn't trade the experience of working for him and the families of Bethune, for the world. He led by example and set the bar high for learning. Lessons weren't only learned in the classroom, but beyond those four walls as well. His staff, students, and families knew we were all ambassadors for Bethune school, no matter where we were. He required a standard for how our work should be conducted. He was a principled man and I am forever grateful to him for giving me the opportunity to be a part of something much bigger than myself. He had a good sense of humor and was always easy to work alongside. It was such a pleasure to visit with he and Nora in the summer of 2021 when I spent a few days in eastern Colorado. It was fun to reminisce and I came to cherish Mr. and Mrs. Poole even more. May he rest in peace and his family receive comfort knowing the impact he made during his time on Earth. His legacy will continue, via the generations he nurtured and grew. You're in my thoughts and prayers.

I can’t thank you enough Mr. Poole for the many wonderful memories and life lessons you guided me through. I especially enjoyed the invitations to enjoy Mrs. Poole’s homemade pie after mowing the lawn during summers. The gatherings with Donna Kay, Father Greg and family. A lot to be thankful for. Memories that I forever keep in a special place in my mind and heart. Thank you for also playing a pivotal role in shaping and molding my work ethic. God, grandpa, dad, you and many others helped shape me into the man I am and I am grateful that you cared. Rest in peace and my condolences to the entire family. All our love- Brian, Michelle, Maggy, Kepple, Colter & Maryn

Dearest Nora and Family--You are in my thoughts during this sad time of saying good by to one of the finest men I have had the privilege to know over my life. I will miss our regular phone calls making it possible for us to continue our close friendship over these many decades. Besides being close to him as a brother-in-law, I will forever value his strong and wise professional counsel during our many car rides back home in Oklahoma. He was a dear friend and I am deeply sadden knowing I will never talk with him again. Please know you have my deepest sympathy. Love to all, Ed

To Nora, Dave, Janet, Sharon and Christy,
I was so saddened to hear about Jim’s passing. I can’t begin to express how sad I was for you all. I know that my dad has been gone for 35 years and my mom for almost 23 years now. I know that there is not a week that goes by that I don’t think about them both. I know that for a few years my siblings did not get together much afterwards. It seemed as though the anchors that had kept us together had vanished. However, for the last 20 years we have made a concerted effort to stay connected and it has been a great source of rooting for each of us and to a smaller extent our children. I did get to visit with your dad and mom last fall when I was back in Burlington. As usual it was in my mind a quick trip in and out for a family event. Mike and I were so touched because your mom and dad came out to the Coryell farm just to tell us how much they cared about my dad. I have so many fond memories of your whole family. When Debby texted me about Jim’s death I was immediately saddened and began looking at flights. I felt that I wanted to come in person to tell you how much your dad meant to me. Some of my happiest memories of my time in Burlington have ties to the Poole Family. I think the summer that I worked for Hanna Farms was in many way a great year but a challenging year. I have this very strong memory of being an inept farmer. My memories of that time were that the only job I could do well on the farm was mow Dale’s lawn, carry irrigation pipe and deliver chocolate milkshakes although I was not always successful in those small tasks. I was convinced that I was a total loser at the time and I let it create some pity parties. I remember one time when my dad and I were fighting more than usual, I expressed my self doubt to Jim, I think sometimes Dale was frustrated with me that it was left to Jim to supervise me. I remember your dad and I were doing something together and I expressed in a very self absorbed way, that I was such a loser that I could not even do the basic work of a farmer. I really was not sure what job I could ever do. Jim was quick to tell me that at some point when he and my dad were together that my dad was telling him about something I had done that he had been so impressed with. I know that it was probably just a little comment from your dad but the comment had a huge impact on my self confidence. I have been able to try so many things without the fear of failure looming over me. I have tried and failed so many things since then and failed many of them and had some successes also. I honestly don’t think that my self worth has ever been tied, only my accomplishments or failures since. I also remember that whenever we ever wanted to just stop in and visit, your folks always made me feel they were excited to see us. They were always quick with updating us on what was going on in your lives. I just wanted to tell you how much your dad meant to me, how much the whole family means to me.
I wish I could be there in person to express that to you all.
With all my love and condolences.
